Домашнему насилию подвергаются около 1/3 женщин. Ежегодно около 4 млн. женщин подвергаются нападению с применением физического насилия [ aggravated assault]. В 1996 1,3 тыс. женщин были убиты сожителями. По некоторым данным, в том же году домашнему насилию подверглись около 150 тыс. мужчин, более 500 были убиты. XX в. проблемы, связанные с домашним насилием, находятся в центре внимания СМИ. Особенно это проявилось при освещении судебного процесса над О. Дж. Симпсоном [ Simpson, Orenthal James (O. J.)]. Действуют специальные "горячие линии" [domestic violence hotline], приюты для женщин, подвергшихся насилию и т.д. К домашнему насилию, кроме физического нападения, относят также вербальные оскорбления, угрозы и др. В разной трактовке домашнее насилие считается уголовным преступлением во всех штатах.
